Smart Windows
Smart Windows
Overview
Human spend most of their lives inside buildings and a lot of energy are required for their conditioning and according to the Department of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for 54% of the average American household's energy bill. We may claim that in Saudi Arabia the cost is much higher due to its hot weather. windows can cut heating and cooling costs by half. Smart windows change how they filter the sunlight based on the weather outside. In cold weather, smart windows let more sunlight in, and in warm weather, they keep sunlight out. The smart windows can be used in any place to reduce losses in energy and to enhance energy efficiency and avoid the cost of installing curtains . Their impacts would include material costs, installation costs, electricity costs and durability, as well as functional features such as possibilities for dimming, and the degree of transparency.
Our Research
At SET center, we are exploring different smart windows materials. Thin layer film of the material, with the desired properties, will be used to allow light to pass in room areas where light is needed and to block the light where not needed. Thin film evaporation techniques is used to evaporate the material such as sputtering technique and electron beam evaporation.
