Biomass Energy Research Group

Bio energy is derived from biomass such as plants, animals and their byproducts. Manure, garden waste, crop residues, animal fat are all sources for biomass. Biomass is available almost everywhere and contains much less sulfur and nitrogen, which makes it more environment friendly than fossil sources. Bio- fuel, formed from biomass, can be used to power vehicles and herald more efficient energy production.

Major R&D Thrusts

The Bio Energy Research Group of SET program is a strategic collaboration between several departments of the College of Engineering, College of Science and research centers Our mandate is to promote the sustainable and responsible use of Saudi Arabia agricultural bio-resources for a diversity of goods and services through applied research, engineering, technology and education.

Based on bio waste available in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, our research efforts are mainly concentrated on the following two biomass processes:

  • Production of Biodiesel (by transestherification), which can be used in heavy trucks, ships and other machines.
  • Production of biogas (by anaerobic digestion), which can be used in passenger cars, compressed gas cylinders or as a feed for power plants.
